Everything You Need To Know About Bonza Before It Takes Off

Bonza, Australia’s new, and only independent, low-cost airline, is set to start flying on the last day of January 2023. Here’s everything you need to know about Bonza, before booking a flight.

Bonza’s first flight will take off on Tuesday the 31st of January, from the Sunshine Coast to Proserpine, north Queensland. This marks the beginning of a new era in low cost travel for Australia. Before you get booking, here is everything you need to know about the airline.

Where is Bonza based?

Bonza has its headquarters on the Sunshine Coast. It has a second hub in Melbourne, from which flights will go on sale in a matter of weeks.

What destinations will Bonza fly to?

Bonza will fly to 17 destinations. 13 of these destinations will be reached from its base on the Sunshine Coast. These destinations include Cairns, Townsville, the Whitsunday coast, Mackay, Rockhampton, Gladstone, Bundaberg, and Toowoomba Wellcamp.

Other destinations include Coffs Harbour, Port Macquarie, Tamworth, Newcastle, Albury, Mildura, Avalon, and Melbourne.

What’s so special about Bonza?

Bonza’s network will fly passengers to places they mightn’t otherwise been able to soar to. Bonza says that 93 percent of its routes aren’t currently served by any other airline – and claims 96% of them don’t currently have a budget carrier.

How much will Bonza flights cost?

Bonza is a budget airline. Its flights appear to be more in the Jetstar/Tiger Air (back when Tiger Air used to exist) sort of price range. At the time of writing, to book a return flight from the Sunshine Coast to Cairns in June, you’re looking at about $158 (with just a carry on bag of up to 8kg).

Some other destinations are cheaper though. Currently, flights to Coffs Harbour, Port Macquarie and Rockhampton start at $49.

How do I book a Bonza flight?

At the time of writing, the only ways to book a Bonza flight are a) via a registered travel agent or b) by downloading the Fly Bonza app from the Apple app store (or Google Play) on your smartphone. From there it’s a pretty simple process of filling in your details and the dates of the flight/destination you desire.

What’s the food like on Bonza?

Think: craft beer, snags, banana bread waffles. Also think: pay for what you want (it’s not included in the ticket price). Another interesting note is that there are no food trolleys, and you can order through an app.

What uniform do Bonza flight attendants wear?

Due to the many tropical Queensland destinations Bonza will fly to, staff uniforms include tailored shorts which can be worn with the white cotton t-shirt and blazer which features purple trim and the Bonza values stitched inside on the lining. There’s also a pant option, shirt dress and sleeveless coat.

Accessories include a Bonza thumbs up pin, branded custom socks and a purple scarf that can be worn as a hair, neck or pocket accessory.

As for pilots, they’ll be rocking a crisp white button-up shirt, tailored pants and charcoal blazer with silver stripes. Pilot uniforms are not exempt from a bit of Bonza personality with the addition of purple lining in the blazer, inside of the shirt collar and on-shirt logo. Oh and, in a break of tradition, there’s no pilot hat.

Carly Povey, Chief Commercial Officer at Bonza, said the airline was pretty chill on uniform rules, explaining there will be no ‘grooming guide’ for legends and instead cabin crew, pilots, operation centre and office staff will be able to style various looks depending on where they’re travelling to, their mood on the day and personalities.

“We won’t dictate what lipstick to wear – or whether you have to wear lipstick at all. We won’t ask crew to cover up their tattoos and just because you’re female, that doesn’t mean you have to wear a skirt. If you’re non-binary, pregnant, work in the office or onboard, we have options for you. Bonza is for the many not the few, and that’s what you’ll see with our first-ever uniforms.”

Who founded Bonza?

Former Virgin Blue executive Tim Jordan founded Bonza, along with Lidia Valenzuela and Peter McNally.

When is Bonza’s first flight?

Bonza’s inaugural flight, destination Prosperine, will happen next Tuesday.

What’s its social media like?

Kind of like a budget version of Virgin Australia? You be the judge.
