Indonesia’s Mount Semeru volcano erupts, spews huge clouds of ash

A volcano on Indonesia’s densely populated island of Java has erupted, spewing a huge column of ash into the air and prompting nearly 2,000 people to evacuate from villages in the area. Following the eruption of the Semeru volcano, Indonesia’s disaster mitigation agency (BNPB) said on Sunday 1,979 people had been moved to 11 shelters and authorities had distributed masks to residents. There were no immediate reports of any casualties and Indonesia’s transport ministry said that there was no impact on air travel but notices had been sent to two regional airports for vigilance.
