Innovative Scottish Whisky Makers Reveal Exciting Limited Release For Australians

If you haven’t heard of Fettercairn before, you’ve been missing out. An almost 200-year-old distillery nestled in the foothills of the Cairngorms in the Scottish Highlands, Fettercairn has a long and illustrious history as the whisky of choice for prime ministers, pioneers and poets alike.

An important part of Fettercairn’s history – as well as a crucial part of what makes their whiskies so special – was the development of their unique cooling ring in the 1950s. After a long period of experimentation, Fettercairn’s master whisky makers found that pouring the same cold, pure mountain water they used to create their whisky down the outside of their stills cooled the copper, increasing condensation inside so only the lightest vapours could rise for collection.

To facilitate this, they fashioned a copper ring around the top of the still to continually douse it with water – an ingenious and practical solution that remains unique in Scotch whisky-making to this day. In Scotland, each distillery’s stills have a unique shape; it’s a distillery’s signature as well as an important determining factor in a whisky’s characteristics. Fettercairn’s stills, then, are like no other; they’re a truly potent signature and one that the brand is very proud of. Even the design of their bottles pays homage to that unique cooling ring.

In short, Fettercairn’s whiskies are singularly unique. But their latest release, Fettercairn 16 Year Old 2022 Release, is particularly unique, and will easily be one of 2023’s must-have drops.

Third time’s the charm

Fettercairn 16 Year Old 2022 Release is the third release in Fettercairn’s new annual limited-edition series. Each release of Fettercairn 16 Year Old single malt has been crafted to showcase a distinct maturation journey designed to enhance the tropical distillery character derived from Fettercairn’s unique copper cooling ring distillation process.

Following on from the success of its first two editions, this new edition continues to shine a light on the Fettercairn distillery’s ethos of enlightened whisky making. But more than that, it celebrates what makes Fettercairn different in its quest to defy convention and embrace innovation, by calling on three distinctive cask types to accentuate the mouth-wateringly sublime tropical house style.

This trilogy of casks, personally hand-selected by Fettercairn’s Master Whisky Maker Gregg Glass, see first fill Oloroso sherry casks married with spirit matured and shaped in first fill Pedro Ximénez sherry casks and finally finished in ex-bourbon barrels. This surprising combination will take drinkers on a flavour journey to uncover the depths and dimensions of the Fettercairn story.

What does Fettercairn 16 taste like?

Fettercairn 16 Years Old cleverly unites exotic fruity aromas with tropical sparkle on the palate in the form of ripe guava with patisserie spices, cocoa and a crescendo of natural vanilla to create surprising layers of rich and refined flavour bringing depth to the ripe exotic fruit characteristics typically found in Fettercairn spirit when it reaches its mid-late teens.

The result? A rich amber gold whisky, bottled at 46.4% ABV, with notes of dried exotic fruits and notes of mature oak. Put it to your lips and big tropical flavours will excite your tastebuds, with a finish reminiscent of ginger cake, passionfruit, baked apple and just a hint of coffee lingering at the end: a truly luxurious and intriguing dram.
