Like a tiger stalking through the jungle, about to pounce on its prey, your motivation lurks inside you. It’s waiting to jump out and defeat everything in its path! Are you ready to embrace your inner beast and finally slay your fitness goals?

Our motivation is what keeps us going, even when times get tough. It’s what keeps us moving towards our goals and keeps our ambitions high. Learning how to dig deep and harness this force will give you the upper hand when it comes to getting into shape or sticking to a nutrition plan.

How to take control of your motivation

If you are looking for ways to stay motivated and focused, there are a few simple tips you should implement. These will help you stay on track when times get tough.

Know your reason why

It’s crucial to have a specific goal in mind and a reason for wanting to reach that goal. Having a motive will keep you going, and it will be the roots from which your motivation grows. No matter your reason, commit it to memory and make sure you know it by heart. There will be times when you face hardships and challenges, and you will need to remind yourself why you chose to strive for this goal in the first place.

Set goals

Goal setting is crucial to your success. Setting both achievable and realistic goals will help you reach your health and wellness dreams. Your goals are going to be what keeps you pushing forwards. Without them, you are setting yourself up for failure. Define your goals and commit them to memory.

Make it fun

If you are serious about getting in shape, you will likely encounter some gruelling workouts and have to stick to a wholesome meal plan to achieve the results you want. Fortunately, that doesn’t mean you can’t have some fun along the way! Think of ways that you can make this journey more enjoyable for you. Buy some new workout clothes, download a fun playlist to listen to while you workout, or schedule gym time with your friends, where you can smash out your workouts together. The more fun you have on this journey, the more motivated you will be to stick with it.

Set a routine

When it comes to staying motivated, having a set routine is extremely important. If you wake up in the morning without a plan, there is a good chance that you may push aside your most important goals to do what is easiest. Before you go to bed each night, make a quick schedule for the day. Plan to accomplish everything you need to do to reach your fitness goals first. Whether it be cardio, a training session, or some meal prep, get up a few minutes earlier to get it done. Be sure you do this every single day.

It may be tough at first, especially if you aren’t a morning person but studies show it only takes three weeks to create a habit. This means after the first few weeks; things will get easier. Eventually, you won’t even have to think about smashing out your goals. It will be an integral part of your day, just like brushing your teeth or putting on your seatbelt when you get in the car.

Track your progress

To keep your motivation up, you have to derive some satisfaction from what you are doing – it’s got to feel good! One of the best ways to accomplish this is to track your results. Once you start to see improvements in your fitness level and begin to look and feel better, your motivation will sky-rocket!

When you start your fitness journey, take your measurements and write them down. Record your starting weight, body fat percentage, and all your measurements (waist, chest, bicep, quads). Next, strip down to your tighty-whities and take selfies in the bathroom mirror. For some people, this comes easy (take a quick scroll through Instagram!), but for others, this may be an uncomfortable process. Don’t worry! No one has to see these pics except for you. Hide them away in a secret folder on your phone; just make sure you take them! They will be essential for gauging just how far you’ve come in your transformation journey and keeping your motivation up along the way. When you look back on your starting point, you will be so proud of yourself, and it will make all of your hard work worth it.

Reward yourself

Treating yourself after completing milestones along the way is a great way to keep you pushing hard to get to your final goal. After the first week of staying strong, reward yourself with a new set of workout clothes; after the third week, buy yourself a new pair of running shoes or that fancy set of Bluetooth headphones you’ve been looking at. Small incentives along the way will keep you pumped and working hard.

Rally the troops

Sometimes the easiest way to stay motivated is to find someone else to keep you motivated! Enlist a friend to share your health journey with you – the more, the merrier, right? Or find a buddy you can call to check in with to keep you on track and accountable. When times get tough, or you feel like giving in and giving up, a good friend can be there to talk you through it. The more support you have, the more likely you will overcome any obstacles that fall in your path and push hard, right to the very finish.

Now is the time to figure out what motivates you to do your very best. There is a beast inside you, just waiting to come out. Harness that monstrous power and keep it strong every single second. You’ve got this!
