Court rules against officials in landmark Jakarta pollution case

A group of Jakarta residents has won a legal battle for clean air. A court in Indonesia has found the president and top government officials negligent for failing to establish proper standards to curb pollution. The "citizen's lawsuit" was filed two years ago, against seven politicians – including Jakarta's governor, Anies Baswedan. The court said President Joko Widodo, should strengthen Indonesia's air quality standards. It is a problem Widodo has raised before, in 2019, when he admitted pollution around Jakarta was out of control.
