Hamas, Israel likely back to negotiating table as truce disagreements persist

The US Secretary of State has arrived in Tel Aviv, where he's expected to discuss the terms of a potential deal between Israel and Hamas, to end the war on Gaza. Antony Blinken says he wants to broker an extended pause to the war in Gaza. He's on his latest visit to the Middle East, where he's been meeting with leaders across the region. Al Jazeera's Rory Challands has the latest developments in occupied East Jerusalem. As Blinken visits the region, the Biden administration is tasked with narrowing the gap between itself and Netanyahu’s government, according to Menachem Klein, a political science professor at Bar-Ilan University in Israel. The two differ on the issues of ending the war and establishing a Palestinian state, Klein told Al Jazeera, speaking from West Jerusalem. The Israelis additionally have a plan of expanding the war with Hezbollah on the northern front in the spring, he added. The differences persist as both Biden and Netanyahu play to their own interests, the professor said. “Netanyahu’s interest is to play on time,” Klein said, adding that the Israeli PM may stall and mislead Biden until the US elections end later this year. Biden, meanwhile, is focused on easing hostilities due to it being an election year, and is therefore pushing for a two-state solution and Arab-Israeli normalisation following the end of the war, the professor also said.
