The highly anticipated Sony Pictures film Morbius is almost here, with the film finally dropping in April this year. The film has been in the works since 2017 and is the first live-action film adaptation of the pseudo-blood-sucking vampire, Morbius, from the Marvel comics. Here’s everything you need to know about Morbius before you sink your teeth in.

Release Date Australia
The Morbius release date has been pushed back — again — and will now be released in cinemas on April 1, 2022. Sony Pictures initially set out to release Morbius in cinemas on July 31, 2020, with the first teaser trailer dropping in January of that year. However, Morbius is among many film productions that were delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
As cinemas worldwide began to shut, the release was pushed back (again) to March 2021, then October 2021, then to January of this year, and now April 1st.
We hope for their (and our) sake, the film’s release isn’t delayed again because the trailer looks incredible.
Cast
Morbius is based on the Marvel comics of the same name and will follow biochemist Michael Morbius as he’s turned into a ‘bloodsucker’. The titular character will be played by Jared Leto, who will star alongside Matt Smith, Jared Harris, Adria Arjona, and Michael Keaton. Tyrese Gibson also appears in the film as Simon Stroud, an FBI Agent who hunts down Morbius. At the helm of Morbius is Swedish director Daniel Espinosa, who has directed other action-packed flicks, including Easy Money, Safe House and Child 44, but Morbius marks his first film in the superhero genre.
Matt Sazama & Burk Sharpless wrote the film’s script, and the score is composed by Jon Ekstrand, who has worked on Espinosa’s previous films.
Sony Pictures also signed deals with Netflix and Disney in April 2021 for the rights to their films to be available on their respective streaming services after an initial cinematic release.
The Plot
For those unfamiliar with the Marvel Comics, created by writer Roy Thomas and designed by penciler Gil Kane, Dr Michael Morbius first appeared in The Amazing Spider-Man #101 as a doctor suffering from a rare blood disease. Dr Michael Morbius creates a cure that comes at a terrifying cost and afflicts him with a form of vampirism. He has superpowers in speed, strength, night vision, echolocation and is forced to digest fresh blood to sustain his life. The character of Dr Michael Morbius has gone on to appear throughout the Marvel Universe before landing his solo comic in the early nineties, in which he became one of Spider-Man’s greatest villains.

Similar to Venom, the Morbius trailer teases Dr Michael Morbius won’t necessarily be portrayed as a typical ‘villain’ per se; instead, the film will likely shed light on the complexities of this anti-hero suffering from a rare blood disorder and transforming into a pseudo vampire.
What The Critics And Reviews Say
Though Morbius will be released in April, thanks to one Reddit user posting their review of a Morbius test screening, here’s a little sneak peek of what to expect.
Feeling_Leg_886911 wrote, “Jared Leto does a good solid job as Morbius; he looks cool when he goes full vampire mode. And the look is 100 per cent comic accurate which is a cool costume and all… I will say though Morbius is a much more serious character than Venom so he wasn’t as much fun as Venom. But if you like a more serious vibe better you might like Morbius himself better than Venom.”
“It was a fine solid solo comic book origin movie its worth seeing if you like the character or are just someone who wants to watch comic book movies in general. Compared to Venom, I would say slightly better film but less silly fun.”
It will definitely be interesting to see how Morbius fits into the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) as technically this film is not an official MCU film. However, with Michael Keaton reprising Vulture, a role he played in the MCU, and with both Spider-Man: No Way Home and Loki introducing the multiverse to the MCU last year, Morbius may just be the beginning of cross-over films.
Plus, with several references to Venom in the Morbius trailer, there are heaps of rumours of a possible Tom Hardy cameo swirling around; which isn’t too much of a leap considering the actor made a cameo as Eddie/Venom in the latest MCU Spider-Man film.
In January 2021, Leto also teased he may appear as Morbius alongside the character Blade, who will be played by Marshela Ali, also sparking many rumours and theories from fans for potential MCU crossovers.
In January of last year, The Late Late Show musician and frontman Reggie Watts asked Leto about a Blade and Morbius crossover, to which Leto responded, “you know, that is a good question, and I could see that happening in the future. I do… I can see that happening, yeah.”
