The New Ant-Man Film’s Red Carpet Was A Watch Spotter’s Paradise

The world premiere of Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania was an appropriately stylish, star-packed ‘do which had Marvel fans frothing – but watch fans were frothing too, as many red carpet attendees really brought the horological heat.

The 31st film in the ever-growing Marvel Cinematic Universe and the first in its ‘Phase Five’ has an exceptionally packed cast: Paul Rudd, Evangeline Lilly, Jonathan Majors, Michelle Pfeiffer, Michael Douglas, David Dastmalchian, William Jackson Harper, Bill Murray…

Naturally, the A-listers brought their A-game when it came to their red-carpet outfits – Evangeline Lilly and Kathryn Newton were particularly glamorous in dramatic white dresses. The blokes, however, came through with some seriously cool and eclectic watches. Here were our favourites.

Paul Rudd – Grand Seiko ‘Boshū’

First up, the man of the hour himself – Paul Rudd, a.k.a. Ant-Man. Paul kept things crisp in a light houndstooth suit and tie ensemble but spruced it up a bit with a Grand Seiko Elegance Boshū (ref. SBGW287) – a real aficionado’s watch.

As Grand Seiko themselves put it, the deep burgundy red of this watch’s dial and strap was inspired by the rich autumn colours of Boshū, the sekki (season) when the trees that surround the Grand Seiko Studio Shizukuishi in northern Japan change in hue and announce that winter is just around the corner.

What we like is that it’s also the colour of Ant-Man’s suit in the MCU – so Rudd’s giving a nice little nod to his character.

Other than its colour, it’s a rather subtle piece: stainless-steel, time-only and manual-winding, it’s not your usual celebrity watch. Many celebrities don’t actually own the watches they wear on red carpets: they’re often just loaners from brands, especially if they’re a brand ambassador. Grand Seiko doesn’t really do brand ambassadors though – Rudd definitely owns this watch, and he’s clearly got great taste.

Randall Park – Jaeger-LeCoultre Reverso

Randall Park, who reprises his fan-favourite role as FBI agent Jimmy Woo in Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, contrasted a pretty casual outfit with a rather formal, rather lovely Jaeger-LeCoultre Reverso Tribute Monoface Small Seconds in green (ref. Q397843J) for the red carpet.

Simply put, the Reverso is one of the most iconic watches of all time and a truly dapper choice that demonstrates that Park, like Rudd, is clearly a watch guy. Similarly, this model keeps things classic except for its eye-catching intense green colour scheme.

Mounted on a Casa Fagliano strap and featuring a small seconds counter at 6 o’clock, this Reverso is the epitome of understated class.

Mario Lopez – Panerai Submersible

Actor and TV host Mario Lopez isn’t actually in Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, but we won’t hold that against him, as we’re big fans of the classic black Panerai Submersible (ref. PAM02973) he wore for the film’s premiere.

A favourite of Hollywood stars like Arnold Schwarzenegger, Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson and Jason Statham, the Submersible is the most diving-focused watch in Panerai’s range, boasting a unidirectional timing bezel and Panerai’s famous crown lock.

Bill Murray – Timex Easy Reader

Finally, we have Bill Murray, who is in Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania – as a villain, actually – who clearly just doesn’t give a fuck any more and decided to wear a cheap-as-chips Timex Easy Reader 35 (ref. T2H2819J) to the red carpet.

We’ve seen Murray wear this understated watch more than a few times. Notably, he wore his Timex at the 74th Annual Cannes Film Festival for the inaugural screening of Wes Anderson’s The French Dispatch… While double-wristing with a vintage Cartier Tank Solo. The man has nice watches, he just doesn’t care.
