When mobile gaming came onto the scene back in 1994, we had no way of knowing what a huge industry it would grow to be. Nowadays, we are so used to having games available to us wherever we go, that we barely remember a time when you had to be sitting in front of a PC or laptop to play! By the end of this year, the mobile gaming industry is expected to be worth $120 billion, and it doesn’t look like it will stop growing any time soon. Although the future is bright, there have been some moments in the past that have been absolutely incredible as well. Join us now as we take a look back at the most iconic mobile games we’ve ever played. Whether it’s the best UK casino game for you, a fantasy game with spells and magical creatures or a shooter game, there’s something on our list for everyone.

Temple Run

Temple Run is what is known as an endless runner: a style of game in which the player’s character must run, nonstop, along a course featuring various hazards that must be avoided and circumvented. It first came out in 2011 and went straight to iOS, only later was it developed for Android as well. The first iteration was a huge commercial success and led to a number of follow-up games, but none has the exact same spark as the first.

In Temple Run, you can choose between a number of player characters; Zack Wonder, a star football player, Scarlett Fox, a well-trained escape artist, Karma Lee the fastest runner in the East, Montana Smith, a famed explorer, Barry Bones, a hardened city cop or Francisco Montoya, a Spanish conquistador. Whichever character you choose will need to set out through the course to capture the Golden Idol from an ancient Aztec Temple. It’s only once they are inside that the player will realize that they are not alone! The temple is inhabited by demonic monkeys who would like nothing more than to catch and devour your player.

The controls are fairly simple: you need only swipe left or right to collect the coins that you see along the way or avoid the obstacles that litter your path. To jump, you need only swipe upwards.

Shadowgun Legends

Shadowgun Legends comes to us from Madfinger Games and is the third instalment in the Shadowgun franchise. It is available on Android and iOS and it was first released in 2018, to much praise from fans and critics. This is a layered game, consisting of many modes that will keep you occupied for hours at a time: Ascendancy, Duel, Dungeons (featuring Brothers of Fire, Voltaic Fist, and Hive Mind), and lastly Arenas (featuring Gold, Silver, and Bronze levels).

ShadowGun Legends

This iconic mobile game is what is known as an FPS or First Person Shooter, that features elements of the MMO and role-playing genres. When the game kicks off, you must create your Shadowgun, which can be either a male or female soldier. You spawn in The Hub, the in-game base, where they have access to various missions handed out by NPC’s (non-player characters) as well as the bar, shops, and casino in-game. You move forward in the game by completing the missions that are given to you: at the end of each mission, you will receive points that allow you to progress.

Candy Crush Saga

At this stage, there can’t be any person in the world who owns a smartphone who doesn’t know of Candy Crush Saga! Originally released on Facebook in 2012, the game quickly transferred to both iPhone and Android. It’s simple, it’s fun, and it will hold any player’s attention for hours and hours at a time.

Candy Crush Saga

The game is played by swapping out brightly coloured pieces of candy on a board in order to make a match of three of the same pieces. These pieces will be eliminated from the board and replaced, and so the game goes on. You can match four of the same and they act as a power-up and take more candies off the board. There are many different goals and easier or more difficult boards as you progress.

The financial success of the game was a home run for King. Candy Crush is widely considered to be the first and best of the “freemium” genre – this is a pricing strategy in which you receive the initial base game free of charge and are then able to purchase further levels/ services etc. There’s no doubt that once you start playing, you’ll be completely hooked. The game developers certainly knew what they were doing when they released Candy Crush!

Hearthstone

Although Activision Blizzard is currently in the news for not-so-great reasons, they certainly did an incredible job when they released Hearthstone in 2014. While the game was initially designed for Mac and PC, it was also released to both iPhone and Android later that same year.

Interestingly, Hearthstone is set within the Warcraft world. Even though it’s digital, it’s technically a card game. You select your character from one of the available classes: demon hunter, druid, hunter, mage, paladin, priest, rogue, shaman, warlock, warrior, death knight, neutral or multi-class. Your end goal is to defeat your opponent by reducing their health to zero and win the game. You can play four different types of cards: minions, spells, weapons or hero cards. Hearthstone is another example of a freemium game.

Wrap Up

While we’ve only listed a few of the top mobile games here, there are so many more available! There are enough to pique the interest of any kind of gamer, hopefully, our list will get you started.
