US/AMERICAS:
The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) has released a preliminary report stating that bolts appeared to be missing from a door plug on a Boeing 737 Max 9 operated by Alaska Airlines, which blew out midair last month. This incident led to the grounding of the Max 9 by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) for much of last month. The report places the primary blame on Boeing, and Boeing’s CEO has acknowledged the company’s responsibility for the problem. The FAA has halted Boeing’s planned production expansion of the 737 Max, and is conducting an audit of Boeing’s production lines. The missing bolts, which acted as a fail-safe mechanism to hold the panel in place, were not installed on the aircraft, and it is suggested that Boeing employees may have failed to put the bolts back on the door plug during the production of the 737 Max 9 jet at the factory.
